Man, am I tired! I can't believe it's finally time for bed.
I'm Flat Stanley, and I belong to Eli at Schaller-Crestland Elementary School. His Uncle Brian is my traveling partner for the weekend. We are also traveling with 49 other students, teachers, and parents from Aplington-Parkersburg Middle School in Aplington, Iowa. I can't wait to get back to tell you all about it!

My journey to Washington, D.C. started out around 4:00 am this morning when we got on a bus and headed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From there, we flew in an airplane to Chicago, Illinois and then on to Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. is the capital city of our country, like Des Moines is the capital of Iowa. Only this place is larger, much larger!

We started the day visiting the World War II memorial. It is dedicated to those who fought in the war and those who helped our country. The water isn't flowing in this beautiful memorial because it's too cold, but can you see the Washington Monument behind it? It honors our first President and is made from two different types of stone. Can you see the colors?
We also drove down Embassy Road where countries from all over the world have buildings to help their citizens who are visiting the United States. Each house the country's flag on the front.
We stopped at the National Cathedral Church. It is enormous and took almost 90 years to build. Isn't it beautiful? Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan are buried here. Have you heard of them? There's also a piece of the moon in one of the stained glass windows! I liked it here because it was so peaceful and beautiful.
We made a stop at the Smithsonian National Zoo just to try to get a glimpse of the pandas, but they were not outside. We did find these guys, though! They were roaring at me! I'm glad they were far enough away!
No, we didn't visit China. We went to Chinatown, a neighborhood in Washington, D.C. We ate at a restaurant and watched all of the people walk by wearing their Washington Capitals professional hockey team jerseys on. The hockey team was playing next door.
We finished our evening visiting the memorials of some very important people of our country. We saw the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
What a day! I can't wait to tell you more about tomorrow and maybe you can meet some of my new friends!
